Game On

Alright, I've got mine ordered and in the mail. So if anyone is around the I.C. area they can borrow it when I'm done. Also, I feel like I'm already abusing this service, Kevin really shouldn't have given me permission. Perhaps a post per day quota should be enforced, these type of things can get out of hand.

That is a sweet pic mouse. Notice that the next generation is heavily represented. You, me, and Kristin have a sibling in the mix. Little bastards.

what do you think we were doing when we were there age? probably tackling the shit out of each other at olive court with 40's in our hands. we didn't even have elders to guide us.

-just realized none of us have older siblings (sans greg, but erin's responsible so she doesn't count).

ALright So I bought the book and read it, know waht do I do? Or were we just supposed to read the first chapter and then talk about that, or do I need to write a book report and post that?

Really I'm fucking confused here, oh shit, I think I just read the wrong book. But honestly how does this all work.

Also just in case anyone is illiterate I have procured the audio book. Let me know if you fall behind and we can have someone read to you.

I'm ready to discuss. Did you say that your students are reading this book, Kristin?

My students wil be reading this book, but not for a few weeks. I would say we need to set a discussion date...how about Oct. 30...I like the Halloween connection with this novel.

Fuck Jesus, I just got the book and started reading it last night. A little bit of a change from reading pages, but I did enjoy the reference to the nuclear doomsday clock in one of teh newspaper headlines early on. Five minutes to midnight, seems like some things never really change.

Wait...explain the 5 minutes to midnight thing to me? Or, should we wait. I guess I didn't know why that was a signfificant time.

Well maybe this deserves some explanation since this books strives to get to midnight and has clocks at every chapter. I have watched a few documentaries about it in the past but most of this is stolen from wiki.

The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic clockface maintained since 1947 by the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago. These people get together every once and a while and feel out the world scene and the progress/digression of how close the world is to destroying itself (mainly in a nuclear fashion.) They can then adjust the clock closer to midnight for bad shit, further away for progress. The clock has been at 2 minutes to midnight one time during the cold war when with in a year Russia and the US both tested their first thermonuclear devices. It has gone as far back as 14 minutes, but right now (surprise, surprise) it stands at five minutes to midnight (thank you Pakistan, India, and US foreign policy). Generally it seems like the right pushes it closer and the left draws it back (my opinion).

It is referenced like crazy in all forms of art the worst being

Zeitgeist, a Smashing Pumpkins album, includes a song entitled "Doomsday Clock."

or

In Ozzy Osbourne's "Black Rain" album a song titled "Countdown's Begun" makes reference to the clock. (lame ass albums)

the best being

In Magic the Gathering 4th edition, there is an artifact called Armageddon Clock that deals increasing damage to each player, speeding up the game's current outcome if left unattended.

or

Gummi Bears Season 4 Episode 4 "A Knight to Remember" The ghost of a Gummi knight helps Cubbi destroy the mysterious Doomsday Clock.
